On May 1st, 2011 the semi-secret Navy special operations group, known as Seal Team 6 hit a compound in which Osama bin Laden had been hiding for the past six years, killing bin Laden in the process. Military personal have gone on the record stating that bin Laden showed a great deal of discipline and self-denial by staying inside the secret compound for the last six years without leaving even a single time. Most Americans would find it difficult to stay in a single location without venturing outdoors for even six weeks. Bin Laden knew that if he went outdoors, he would be identified and the entire operation of al-Qaida could potentially be compromised. The Navy Seals recovered several computers, around 100 flash drives, and bin Laden’s personal journal, giving intelligence officers volumes of information to sort through to find clues to help win the War on Terror.
All of this information, especially his journal, has helped the intelligence community understand their mistakes in thinking about bin Laden for the past several years. Instead of acting as an inspirational leader for terror cells around the world, he was intimately involved with planning and strategy for terror plots, contrary to what military intelligence suspected. His choice method of communication was to use portable solid-state memory devices, flash drives, with messages to and from terror operatives in different parts of the world. With approximately 100 of these devices seized by the Seals in the raid, a great deal of insight has been gained by military and counter-terrorist organizations. The biggest surprise was the level of involvement that bin Laden continued to play in the plots that have taken shape in the last several years worldwide.
The seized information showed that bin Laden was prompting more attacks against the US and that small towns, public transit, and various locations around the country should be targeted, not just big cities. This would help to keep the DHS (Dept. of Homeland Security) and other affiliated agencies spread thin, offering a higher probability of success for al-Qaida operatives. He urged terror cells to strike on important dates to unnerve Americans even more. Dates such as the 4th of July and the upcoming 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11th attack were mentioned in specific.
