The Biggest Window in Space – Copula

Bookmark and Share

The Endeavour shuttle launch will ensure an important contribution of Europe in the field of space research and technology.  The Endeavour is going to deliver Cupola, which is a dome shaped space unit with windows and Node 3 which is also known as Tranquility, a final connection unit. Both these units come from Italy where Thales Alenia Space manufactured them.  The manufacturing of these units in Europe was significant as well since it means that now Europe is advancing quickly in Space engineering and proving its mettle in this particular field. Without such contributions, it was impossible to recognize the potential of European space engineering.

Copula contains the biggest window that has ever been sent to space. The window has a diameter of 80 cm, which is the biggest of all windows that has been in space. The Copula had seen abandonment twice and thus finally after its installation in a few days it will be a remarkable achievement in space history. The main reasons for the abandonment were that it was very difficult to fit in the main equipments. Moreover, suffering from some serious accidents and setbacks NASA sent only those units in space, which were necessary at that point of time. The Copula had to wait its turn for as long as 6 years now. The project waited its turn from 2004.

Although the design of Copula was meant for launch on a shuttle pallet, the engineers worked real hard to ensure that it is able to ride on with Tranquility.  The port of Copula is downward facing, which means that the astronauts will be able to view the station’s belly. Moreover, what is more important is that Copula will provide an amazing view of the Earth to the astronauts in space. This is where Copula scores and makes it to the space history books.
