Occupy Wall Street hits its stride in 70 cities

To call the latest in civil disobedience campaigns boisterous seems like an enormous understatement! There have already been well over 700 arrests involving protestors who support the Occupy Wall Street movement and even President Obama has thrown his “two cents worth” into the fray. He apparently supports the effort as do many of the leading Democrats including VP Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi, the House Minority Leader.

Just what is the Occupy Wall Street movement all about?

In just the past month over seventy cities have become involved, putting on demonstrations and gathering donations amounting to over $60,000 from their online web site. Let’s just hope this doesn’t take a bad turn because when the likes of Nancy Pelosi, who makes such statements as “God bless them for their spontaneity”! many will listen up and perhaps be swayed by her and the gathering thunder coming from the Democrats, even likening the Wall Street movement to the Tea Party. Adbusters magazine, a Canadian based media foundation suggested there be a peaceful occupation involving Wall Street (apparently the root of all financial wrongdoing). This movement began to snowball and within months became a widespread protest led by those who choose to voice their displeasure with corporate greed, economical inequality, and monetary influence on society. It certainly has made some valid points but the whole idea of a mob of protestors taking over cities is pretty scary! Around the country this October there have been an increasingly vocal, visual, and ever growing amount of protests and if they turn to violence to make their presence known, who knows where it will end?

Brought about by the financial meltdown in recent years

We all have good reason to be upset with how poorly many financial institutions have treated the public as well as how poorly so many issues have been handled since the 2008 meltdown of our economy and when so many remain out of work or have witnessed their savings dwindling pathetically, or have had their home yanked out from under by foreclosure, we cannot help but agree that something must be done to salvage our country’s pride and financial stability. However marching in the streets, carrying signs, and screaming out slogans only brings back thoughts of the 1960’s and the Viet Nam protests and how poorly those events went for our country.

The “movement” is growing and it may be too late to stop it!

Even here in the heartland of America, cities like Springfield, MO hosted protests recently. Joining the “big cities” like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago in demonstrations we have yet to decide whether this is a “growing mob” of shiftless and loud mouthed protestors or the beginning of something ground breaking and worth while. They just might succeed if they get their collective “stuff” together and quit getting arrested for disorderly conduct and assaulting police officers. And they’d better do it soon before someone really gets hurt!
